Advice for college freshman. Real insights from P2P alumni now on campus.

"While my friends were doing odd jobs to earn their pocket money, I managed to earn a decent amount by working as a part time Peer2Peer Tutor. My MOM, Kathy, was very understanding from the start and looked out for me all the time almost like my real mom. The client was also very flexible in terms of my schedule since I was working part time elsewhere. The student was remarkably bright and at first I was shocked to see her struggling. However, I sat down with her and tried to figure out why even though she understood all the material, she didn't perform well in tests (we started with a D grade). After discussing with another friend, I realized that I needed to focus on creating a test environment so I started giving her practice tests and worksheets. This helped her out and soon she overcame test anxiety to pull through with an A grade. Going through this experience was personally fulfilling for me and it also helped me overcome a shortcoming - I was always afraid of dogs before, but even their dog made me feel welcome! I think, indirectly, I even owe this to Peer2Peer."

"[Working for Peer2Peer] is really such a great job. You can choose your own hours so you don't have to give up any sports or clubs! If you ever feel there's a problem you can always talk to the peer2peer MOM. You can also ask [other tutors] for help or advice. Everyone is here to support you! I was nervous at my first job, but it turned out great. It's really great because you get to work with kids and you can help them because you understand them best."

"I've been having a really great time tutoring Andrew. He doesn't have that much homework, so I decided to read A Raisin in the Sun with him. It was a slow start; he kept saying that he didn't like reading. By the end of the play he was having a blast, doing brilliant impersonations of Mama and hilarious reenactments of the fights between Walter and Ruth (his favorite being "Man say 'I got me a dream.' Woman say 'Eat your eggs!'"). After finishing the play, we revisited the Langston Hughes poem for which it is named "A Dream Deferred" and I asked him the poem's question: "What happens to a dream deferred?" He gave me one of the longest, strongest, and most analytical responses I have ever heard--one significantly better than the explanation most of my peers in AP Lit could have given. It was an amazing experience."

"Greg did a great job today. We started off by reading some magazine articles to work on his reading comprehension and reading-aloud skills. I was surprised by how focused he was during the reading; he stayed on task and only started conversations that related to the topic of the article. We then worked on the conclusion to his Dogs vs Cats paragraph. We took a few minutes to brainstorm and he came up with a great conclusion. We only made it through 3 spelling words, but he did a very nice job of translating spoken words to written words (especially after his mom taught me a neat trick for tackling tough words.) I also started a reward chart for him with the categories of Homework, Focus, Effort, and Organization. Every week, he will earn stars in each category and, once he reaches 5 in each section, he will get a prize!"

"Tutoring for P2P is a hugely rewarding experience-- I feel like my academic life becomes directly useful and important outside the classroom.  I have the opportunity to help younger students in situations that I can remember facing myself."
- Emily Shniderman, Wootton '07 & NYU Class of 2011.

"Having the weekly paycheck and the experience to put on my college application certainly separated me from others during the application process."

"Peer2Peer Tutors provides an opportunity for students to teach fellow students in a way that will influence a new form of tutoring. This experience has not only provided me with the chance to bring up a student's grades, but to mentor a friend. As a reward, it opened up great big windows during the college application process for both me and those who I have tutored."
- Bryan Reisberg, Whitman '06 & New York University Class of 2010.

"Tutoring for Peer2Peer Tutors has been a great experience. The pay is great, the hours are flexible, and signing up was really easy. I can commit as much or as little time as I wanted to, and I can pick which subjects I want to tutor in. If I have any problems, I know who to talk to, and issues are worked out quickly."
- Raman Gupta, Whitman '05 & UPenn Engineering Class of 2009.

"They [students] have pulled their grades up remarkably. Alex finished the quarter with an A, and Randy got a B. They both pulled their grades up from a B and C respectively."
- Libby Greismann, Churchill '06 & Stanford Class of 2010.

"So I applied to Boston College early action in hopes of getting nominated for this thing they have called the Presidential Scholarship. It's full tuition and summer programs, with stipends, and honors seminars, a summer in France, and so on. It's basically everything you could ask for in a scholarship. And they nominated me, along with 57 other students. We spent 5 days up there earlier in Feb going through interviews and they eventually offered it to about 22-28 of us, and 15 of us will accept it and go. And I'm one of them- I found out on Friday."
- Jonathan Pike, Wootton '06 & Boston College Class of 2010.

"Being a tutor for Peer 2 Peer Tutors, was a very gratifying experience this past school year. I was able to help out other students in the community, and at the same time hone my own personal skills in Spanish, along with receiving payment for this fun job."

"Thank you for hiring me as a tutor for your company. Tutoring Daniel and working with the Goldberg family was a great experience. I want to be a teacher when I'm older and this was a fantastic way for me to start. I would love to work more for Peer2Peer Tutors in the future. Thanks again!"
- Alexa Romano, WT Woodson '07.

"I want to thank you for all your time and efforts. I will definitely tell everyone I know that Peer2Peer is a fun, easy, rewarding job because that's exactly what I felt. I know that for the Green family alone I have made a difference because within the time I helped them, C's jumped up to A's in nearly everything we worked on together."
- Kunal Khosla, Churchill '06 & George Washington University Class of 2010.
